About Denver
Attractions in Denver
El Chapultepec
This smoky little old-school joint hears some good tunes and attracts a diverse mix of people. It's a dedicated jazz venue where the music is the main focus, so just park yourself in an old vinyl booth and bop along. Local jazz bands take flight from the tiny stage nightly, where they're sometimes joined by a big name who has just happened to drop by.
Charlie's
Who says Colorado is a straight state? There are masses - predominantly male - at this friendly place who would happily contest that. Shoot some pool, croon a tune in the karaoke lounge, jabber around one of the bars or get down to some music on the roomy dance floor.
Denver Museum of Nature & Science
The Denver Museum of Nature & Science has an IMAX theater and absorbing exhibits for all ages.
Palace Arms
The patriotic pioneer decor inside the Brown Palace's award-winning restaurant dates back to the 1700s - check out the silver centerpiece the British royal family commissioned. The food is as impressive as the old-world ambience, and the wine list features 900 bottles. Signature dishes include Kobe rib-eye and seared bison tenderloin. Reservations are essential and men must wear a suit jacket.
Denver Art Museum
The around -million Frederic C Hamilton wing at the Denver Art Museum , designed by Daniel Libeskind (best known for his humiliating disgrace when it came to the future World Trade Center memorial design) is at once a failure and a triumph. We won't lie: the shape of the new wing is rather torturous on the eyes. Yet at the same time this angular, fanlike edifice (which resembles the Sydney Opera House on speed) is mesmerizing.
Wild Oats
This national natural-foods grocery store of favourable repute stocks juices, organic produce and meats, vitamins and all manner of healthy edibles. It's a perfect picnic pick-up stop, plus there's a cafe and a good deli counter.
Colorado History Museum
A number of intriguing and educational exhibits can be found at Colorado History Museum, across from the Civic Center. Highlights include the 'Colorado Chronicle', a fascinating multilayered collage of sorts walking the visitor through the state's past, and an exhibit on the Cheyenne Dog Soldiers, a division of the Cheyenne Nation.
Rocky Mountain Diner
If 'old-fashioned' and 'chicken-fried' are adjectives you like preceding your meal, then yee-haw yourself to this comfy-boothed, family-friendly restaurant. It serves sandwiches, salads and hearty American fare, and for the curious (and very hungry), more exotic dishes such as venison soup or buffalo meatloaf.
Elitch Gardens
If you're finding all the museums a bit too serious, loosen up here - your kids will love you for it. This amusement park is packed with nearly 50 rides, with a varying range of fright-inducement. Opening times can vary; call for the season's schedule.
Wynkoop Brewing Company
We love the breezy ambience at the big Wyncoop, arguably the city's most rocking brewery. It offers an interesting selection of beers and more than 20 pool tables upstairs.
Denver Botanic Gardens
If you're hankering for greenery, this 23-acre expanse of Rocky Mountains shrubbery is the perfect place in which to hide from the hustle and bustle of the city. Local flora mix it up with far away relatives from continents such as Australia and Africa.
